Hi everyone,
We have found it necessary lately to address a common concern that our Permanent Makeup professionals have in regards to their websites. Probably one of the most common questions is….”Why am I not showing up til like the 10th page on Google? People can’t find me, I have a great website”.
Although of course there can be many reasons the first thing I do is go take a look at it. Sometimes it is apparent immediately! Lack or no text on the front page, Lack of content, Lack of relevancy…. and the list goes on and on. But, the most common problems lies “behind the scenes”.
The easiest thing to do is to “view source”. For those of you who don’t know how to do this.. Read on. To View Source on your front page, just right click on the front page, which will bring down a drop down menu. Scroll down to where you see View Source and click on it. It will bring up a wordpad document that will probably look a little like hieroglyphics. But ohhhh, does it tell a story.
Scan your eyes through the first section. You should see references to meta description, meta keywords, meta title. These categories are crucial to the success of a website.
Lets start with meta title. What is the title of your website. If you have a Permanent Cosmetics business in Salt Lake City, perhaps a good meta title would be - “Permanent Cosmetics in Salt Lake City by Jane Doe”. Having a title like ummm.. “Janes Hands On Beauty Boutique” is ambiguous… doesn’t give the person searching too much of an idea of what you are all about.
Moving to the meta description - Same premise as above. A good description will bring good traffic, i.e. Permanent Cosmetics in Salt Lake City - Permanent Eyeliner, Eyebrows, and LipLiner- by Jane Doe. See where I am going with this?
Now probably most crucial of all - Meta keywords - The keywords you select must be related to your business. Period. Using keywords that are not relevant only to be quite frank, pisses the “search engine spiders” off. Keywords for a permanent makeup business should go something like this: permanent makeup, permanent cosmetics, micropigmentation, dermagraphics, permanent eyeliner, permanent lipliner, lash enhancement (if you do that), beauty marks, scar camouflage, areola pigmentation…. etc. Putting words like ummmmm, brilliant, beautiful, illustrious, luxurious… are useless and only heighten your keyword count, which is another no-no. Saying you do hair, nails, massages, facials, etc in your keywords when you don’t is not a good way to go either… particularly if you mention it nowhere on your website. Spiders are wise to the ways people have tried to build traffic.
Let me touch on “Spiders” for a moment. For those of you that are unfamiliar with spiders. Simply put they are like the feelers, Google, Yahoo, AOL, MSN, and all the other search engines put out there to visit your site. They check links on your site, content on your site, behind the scenes on your site, etc. They determine for the most part, where you will show up when people search the web. So it’s best to keep them happy.
What I have touched on in this blog is really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to building or having a site built that bests reflects your professionalism. I use the word professional because you are professionals, and that is the perception you wish to give to the public. It is my suggestion when you get to the point of having a website, let a website professional help you with it. It might cost a few dollars, but in the long run your website will be presented to the public in a manner that is well organized and professional. And hopefully if people can find you, the money you spent will be returned ten-fold.
